In many situations, it is advisable to use products containing CHX in addition to tooth brushing with toothpasteYou know from experience that meticulous oral hygiene is required to ensure the success of professional treatment measures. In many cases, simply cleaning the teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste is not enough. The additional use of a mouthrinse or an oral care gel containing chlorhexidine (CHX) is indicated. Read on to find out more.

CHX is the gold standard

In many situations, it is advisable to use products containing CHX in addition to tooth brushing with toothpaste: for example, in individuals with

  • gingivitis,
  • mucositis or
  • denture stomatitis.

CHX is regarded as the gold standard in anti-plaque agents. It has been successfully used for decades. How does it work? The positively charged CHX attaches itself to negatively charged sites, for example:

  • dental hard tissue,
  • soft tissue,
  • pellicles,
  • biofilm or
  • the cell walls of microorganisms.

As a result, it remains in the oral cavity long after it has been applied.

Meticulous use

CHX is used to restore the ecological balance of the oral microflora and promote the good health of the oral cavity. For this purpose, it has to be applied meticulously. It is available in the form of a mouthrinse or oral care gel to suit the different needs and requirements of the users.

Application problems

Unfortunately, many CHX preparations have certain drawbacks, which include

  • an unpleasant taste or aftertaste;
  • general impairment of the sense of taste;
  • possible discolouration of the natural tooth structure as well as of restorations and the tongue.

Tip: Increase user compliance

Therefore, it is often necessary to motivate people to use oral care products. This is best done by recommending a mild-tasting preparation that is not likely to stain the teeth. This type of product generally contains a lower concentration of CHX in combination with suitable additives. Various studies show that mouthrinses containing 0.1% CHX and oral care gels containing 0.2% CHX have a beneficial effect on oral health.

Conclusion: Highly concentrated products with unpleasant side effects are not always the solution.

Comparatively mild-tasting mouthrinses, for example, Cervitec Liquid, are available. If an oral care gel is preferred, Cervitec Gel featuring 0.2% chlorhexidine and 900ppm fluoride can be used.
