As co-owner of Alien Milling Technologies, I am always looking for the next-generation CAD/CAM technology that will provide our laboratory customers with the highest quality precision dental prosthetics on the market. We are passionate about CAD/CAM milling and 3D printing technologies for efficiently producing all the dental prosthetic products we ship to our customers and pride ourselves on our mastery of the machines we use.
Until recently, our services focused primarily on a full range of fixed dental prosthetics and 3D printed removable partial dentures, night guards and surgical guides. We had been looking for entry into producing digital dentures for the last three years.
We can’t afford any system that poses a margin of error. Our customers depend on us to deliver a highly esthetic and precision fit final product that is ready to be delivered to their dental clients.
When the Ivoclar Vivadent Ivotion Digital Denture System was introduced, we realized that finally, the last piece of the puzzle had been put into place! The time-consuming manual step of bonding denture teeth to the denture base was eliminated. The Ivotion monolithic milling disc combines high-quality PMMA cross-linked denture tooth and esthetic denture base materials into a single bicolored milling disc. We no longer have to mill or print the denture teeth separately and then manually bond the teeth to the milled denture base, a process that normally would require two hours to mill the base with the tooth cavities, two to three hours to print or mill the denture teeth and then the labor-intensive hours to bond the teeth to the base.
With Ivotion Denture System milling time and human intervention are no longer an issue. In one, fast, seamless and predictable workflow process we can mill a complete full arch denture base on the Ivoclar PM7 milling machine in only an hour and a half. After milling, the denture is done. We don’t have to cement it, bond it or check to make sure the teeth are placed correctly. All the small errors that could happen are completely eliminated. We simply polish the finished denture and package it for delivery to our customer. The simplified and efficient process ensures that we meet our promise to our customers of a 24-hour turnaround.
What is most important is that Ivotion takes all the guesswork out of the production process. First, the 3Shape Ivotion CAD design software incorporates what Ivoclar Vivadent calls the Shell Geometry where the gum line and the cavity between the teeth are designed and milled as one unit so there is no need at the end of the milling process for our customers to add gingival material around or between the denture teeth as there is when the base and denture teeth are milled or printed separately and then bonded together.

Second, the automatic nesting feature incorporated into the CAD design and milling software ensures the integrity of the milling process. When we receive the CAD design file from our customers, the designed denture has already been nested in the disc by the CAD software and that nesting design is then read and executed by the PM7 milling machine. That means that you can load the milling machine with several Ivotion discs and mill overnight or during the day without any human intervention. Our customers will receive a final product that exactly replicates the CAD design file they sent us.
