The story behind the new Power Dentin and Incisal materials
When all-ceramics first entered the market, lithium disilicate and zirconium oxide materials were available in either medium or high opacity. These opaque materials produced highly reflective framework structures, which enhanced the brightness of the final restoration. The traditional IPS e.max Ceram Dentin and Incisal materials were specially designed to take advantage of the properties of these opaque structures. The fine balance between brightness and chroma allowed excellent shade matching with shade guides (Fig. 1).
Over the past few years, all-ceramic framework materials showing translucent properties have been developed. These materials have had a considerable influence on layered restorations. The growing trend towards brighter restorations has presented a further challenge.
Since the advanced framework materials are translucent, they tend to be less reflective, which reduces the brightness of the final restoration (Fig. 2).
IPS e.max Ceram "Power Dentin" and "Power Incisal" have been developed in response to this new situation. These materials can be applied on translucent frameworks without having to adjust the customary layering scheme. The outcome is a natural-looking brightness. In addition, these special materials can be used to produce exceptionally bright results on opaque frameworks, in cases where this is needed (Fig. 3).
